Cairo, June 30: Egypt’s first democratically-elected President Mohammed Mursi has promised to free the blind sheik jailed in America for his role in plotting to blow up New York City landmarks.
Mursi vowed to work to free Omar Abdel-Rahman, the spiritual leader of men convicted in the 1993 World Trade Centre bombing.
He also promised to free detained Egyptian protesters facing military tribunals, the Daily Mail reports.
“I will do my best to free all detainees, including Dr Omar Abdel-Rahman,” he said in his first public speech addressing tens of thousands of mostly Islamist supporters.
In his speech, Mursi also defied the country's military rulers by saying, ‘I fear no one, but God.’
Mursi’s remarks came while reading the oath of office at Tahrir Square.
